I really do miss the days of playing my N64, though.
And nowadays you can play games as NANIMALS! I'd wanted that for so long and finally when they have it it's something I'll likely never get to play. Being a cat? AWESOME!

Right now, I'm working through the post-game extra dungeon of Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria.

I've recently tried to play Kid Icarus Uprising. Emphasis on "tried". I'd forgotten how annoying it can be when some games lean too hard into the "touch-screen" gimmick. I don't know how I did it, but somehow I beat the first stage without really knowing what I was doing and then I pressed something and then I was just suddenly in the second stage before I could figure out how to save. My experience with trying to replay KIR was the epitome of "I have no idea what I'm doing, but it seems to be working."

7/10 Odin Sphere is an Action RPG with Beat 'Em Up elements based loosely on Norse mythology with elements of Celtic mythology and the Grimm Fairy Tales. Don't be fooled by the cutesy artstyle of the characters, though. Or the fairly low age rating. This game is tough as balls. It will kick your ass and then start breaking a folding chair over your back before piledriving you into oblivion. It's never unfair, though, and in fact has several features to alleviate frustration if you're willing to experiment around with the alchemy recipes it provides, granting you everything from bombs to Stat buffs and health items. The story is also dark as hell. It's cutesy artstyle actually aids in illustrating just how grim the whole thing by juxtaposing it well. I'd jokingly call it Adorable Game of Thrones, but that's exactly what it is, sans sex and gratuitous swearing. Basically, each side is fighting for power and dominance in outright war or cloak 'n' dagger maneuvers while the doom of them all literally slowly advances on them subtly throughout the story. You play through five "chapters", wherein you control a different playable character in each one and you're told a piece of the overarcing story viewed through their limited lenses as they go about furthering their own agendas before it all culminates in a sixth and final chapter. The main cast: -Gwendolyn, warrior princess of Ragnanival, who basically just wants Daddy to love her but ends up sold to the highest bidder as a trophy wife. I'm not joking. -Cornelius, warrior prince of Titania, who wakes up one day turned into a three-foot-tall rabbit-like creature and also in the Underworld. How's that for a shitty start of your morning? -Mercedes, warrior princess of Ringford, who is literally just trying to prevent the destruction of her kingdom and the death of her people at the hands of Gwendolyn's kingdom. -Oswald, the fearsome nigh invincible Shadow Knight who got his powers when his adaptive father sold him to the Devil. I'm also not joking about that. -Velvet, the crownless ex-princess of the thoroughly defunct kingdom of Valentine (as in, it got carpet nuked), who is trying to undo a death curse that hangs over her and her brother. Oh, and she's also trying to prevent the Apocalypse, but her attempts to get the world's leaders to listen are met with deaf ears. Yeah, she's basically the John Snow of the story, except she actually knows things. Overall, it was a fun, immensely challenging, and satisfying game to play. Wish its "Good" ending could have been a bit happier, though. {Spoiler} the Apocalypse happens, and all but two of the playable characters are dead at the end.

Except with a gun and bear traps. This was definitely a strong start to the game, but my favorite bit is still upcoming. I'll let you know at a more appropriate time, though, since I don't want to accidentally spoil anything.

An oldie but a bestie: Sweet Home is an old horror RPG from 1989 published by Capcom on the NES. It also had Adventure Game and Sim elements. If you've never heard of it, there is a reason for that. It was never released outside of Japan, but there is an excellent Fan Translation online. It was made as a "duel media story", released alongside a film of the same name that told the same story, but they were supposed to be reveal different plot points to complement each other. This odd little experiment in multi-media story-telling failed, because while this game is an excellent early Survival Horror title you can play without seeing the film, you absolutely NEED to have played the game to understand the movie. This game also basically created the format for the Survival Horror genre, as its design decisions are baked into just about every horror game to follow after it. The story of the game has a five-person film crew venture into the long-abandoned mansion of famed artist Ichirō Mamiya, intent on filming a documentary while trying to restore his rumored lost works. The group soon learns that the ghost of Lady Mamiya, Ichirō's wife, haunts the place, and she does not intend to let any intruders escape. The crew fights off monsters and dodges death traps as they search for a way to escape the mansion and exorcise the ghost of Lady Mamiya in the process. Unlike many other RPGs of its era, Sweet Home has a Permadeath system. Thanks to a limited amount of item-carrying slots, losing even one party member makes finishing the adventure exponentially harder, because each party member has important skills that are key to finishing the game. That said, there are items placed throughout the map that can be used to replace the lost party member. However, they are finite in supply. This forces the player to conserve usage of limited items (especially healing items), keep all the party members alive, and use all of the crew's special skills in tandem to survive. 8/10 for me. It holds up amazingly well.

Those "kids" at the school can burn, right? They were probably my most hated enemies in the game, but in a good way. The hospital was just nightmare fuel incarnate, especially the mannequins. I agree. It's like the original game, but polished and with good features added onto the formula.

It didn't help that they are SO unnerving. There is something that makes a mini-boss battle so much more worse when you're actually freaked out by the enemy. Never got that trophy, I don't think.

So is this a time loop? Why did Six let him drop? Are those monsters created by the eye ball filled goo? Or is this all meant as a visceral experience without concrete mythology? Anyway, what was your favorite part?

Time loop is my theory, and I think Six dropped him because she recognized him as The Tall Man without his sack covering his face. I think she meant to stop him from becoming The Tall Man by ending his life right then and there, but instead caused it. Classic Six. My next favorite bit second to the tower is the final confrontation with The Tall Man.

Multiplayer wise I've been playing Dead by Daylight.
Single player wise I've been switching it up between Watch_Dogs Legion and Gears 5.

I feel like the game could’ve gone on from there another few hours because it felt so fresh and different. I wonder if they’ll make a third game.

Yep, there is still a lot of unexplored potential for Little Nightmares. For the moment at least, the studio is done with LN, but game devs have said that before and done more with the franchise they were ending.

So the afterlife, and then Orwellian horror, and now aliens. They could do a lot with that.

Reviews are in and Microsoft’s Xbox & PC exclusive “Forza Horizon 5” is set to tie with another Xbox exclusive with “Psychonauts 2” as the best new game of the year.
With 82 reviews counted, the title has pulled in a 91/100 on Metacritic which is on par with the rest of the series – the third title also scoring a 91 while the fourth landed a 92, that means “Forza Horizon 5” and August’s “Psychonauts 2” (also at 91) are the best-reviewed new games in this calendar year to date.
