I've actually been getting into Demakes lately. Basically, the idea is "Hey, what if this game that was made for PS4 was on... THE PS1!" I know, the idea is absurd. It really is, and yet it has wielded some interesting ideas. One I've played recently is "Soundless Mountain II": which is a demake of "Silent Hill 2": On the whole, yes, Soundless Mountain II is a lesser experience, but yet... It's still fun in its own way and presents a good foundation for making 2D horrors with pixel-based graphics. I’d fanboy out at a donkey Kong or Metroid game made on SNES style or a Mario game in n64 style.

Super Mario 64: Last Impact, Super Mario 64 Land, and SM64: Star Road. All three are entirely new games which run on the Mario 64 engine with their own hub worlds, levels, new enemies, new animations, new game mechanics, power ups from other Mario games, and more.

I've been playing a lot of RPG Maker Horror games lately. RPG Maker is a game maker program that allows people to make their own RPG games, like Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. Some people have managed to figure out how to make Horror games with the engine, and some damn good ones with it, too, despite (and in some cases, BECAUSE OF) the system's limitations. Anyway, today's offering is Cat in the Box, named for Schrödinger's Cat. This game was released on May 2020, which was when I first played it during everyone's isolation phase. You play as a girl who enters the manor of a cult leader, investigating the mysterious overnight disappearance of him and his entire cult for her YouTube channel. Yes, you play as a YouTuber who who explores haunted places for fame and fortune. As can be expected, things quickly go from bad to worse. The girl is almost immediately set upon by a killer wearing a sack over their head as a mask, but upon trying to leave through the front door, she instead finds that the manor has somehow expanded itself into an entire other section that didn't exist before, and there seems to be no exit now. This was a wonderfully spooky game that could have just been schlock, but genuine love and effort was put into making it, and the ending has the kind of twist M. Night Shyamalan wishes he could come up with. It's too good to spoil, but to face to say the game gets very "Mind Screwy". The game is short and can be completed in about two hours. However, it has multiple endings, easily missable secrets, and a bunch of other things that give it a low of replay value. I recommend it for anyone that likes good horror.

Fire Emblem: Awakening for the 3DS. It's a good Tactical RPG and pure perfection as far as FE gameplay goes. It has an open map with several routes you can take and enemies that periodically spawn in previous locations, so you can level grind your Units.
The main downside is that its story is woefully undeveloped. There is enough story here for a trilogy of games about this particular cast of characters, but it's stripped down to such bare bones that many facets are left unexplored. Example, Robin, the main player character, is a mercenary who takes a job working in a foreign land, for the Queen of a country called Ylisse. So, what's wrong with that? Nothing, except Robin just happens to be from Plegia, Ylisse's neighboring nation and chief geopolitical rival. Yet neither anyone in the royal family, nor any of the Ylissan soldiers... Ylissian soldiers? None of the other military personnel from Ylisse show any signs of racism, xenophobia, or even mild distrust for the mercenary who grew up in the country that routinely invades their borders and burns Ylissan/Ylissian small villages to the ground, nor complain when Robin's brought into their ranks. The only person who doesn't like Robin is a Healer named Maribelle, and that's because he's a "commoner". Like, I'm supposed to believe some chick with very elitist views wouldn't also hate Robin for being from the country that's routinely antagonized her homeland? Alas, alas, we're robbed of a story-wide character arc for the main cast in which the Ylissan... Ylissian? The other main characters slowly grow to trust Robin and realize he's not an enemy spy or saboteur despite being from Plegia.

Takes me right back to my childhood. Still a masterpiece. Also Yoshi's greatest hour. Indeed! Though I recommend Wooly World as well. A very charming sequel with basically the same controls— which hold up remarkably well
