Ever played a game where you just can't figure out what to do, so you look it up? Then, when you discover the insanely obtuse solution, you're left speechless at your computer, thinking "How was I supposed to figure that out?" What are some game puzzle/level solutions so obtuse that there is no way a player could discover it on their own?
Forbidden Siren. It has some deep moon logic adventure-game style. I think one character had to put a wet towel in a freezer, so that several chapters later another character could take the frozen towel, put a glass on top of it, and wait for the towel to melt to make the glass drop to distract a guard. There is nothing in the game that prompts you to do this, and yet if you don't, you will fail the mission where you have to distract that guard.

Not exactly the same thing, but I once did an escape room with my cousin in which one major clue was based on knowing the rules of poker. I guess the game designers assumed that someone in any party would know the rules of poker. Two other people joined our team, but, um, well, none of us knew the rules of poker. So we were staring at the poker table trying to remember whatever we could about poker until the gamesmaster just decided to tell us the clue.

More of me blathering about escape rooms, which are not the subject of the thread (but are related!):
I did an escape room this weekend with a friend and my cousin, and it was one of the best I’ve done from a puzzle standpoint. The theming wasn’t that great, basically just props filling rooms with blank walls, but the designers must’ve put a lot of thought into making the clues and puzzles just quite right.
For the most part, at least—I’m still not sure whether the key hidden in the doorjamb between rooms was clever or unfair. But for the most part my friends and I figured out the puzzles but felt smart doing so, which is the best effect for a game to have on a player.

In a game called Metal Gear, many rooms are hidden behind breakable walls. Okay, that sounds fine. A lot of games have breakable walls. Except for one thing. Usually in video games, the dev team is nice enough to cracks on breakable parts of the wall. It's an almost universal language to gamers. "Ooh, a section of wall has a lot of cracks. It must be breakable." Metal Gear looked on this practice and sneered, deciding that all players must be spend hours punching walls to find the right spots unless they had a strategy guide. Oh, and some doors require the player to punch them after they've been opened with a key card once. The game also does not warn you or instruct of this, either.

Maybe, though the second room was packed with props that didn’t feature in the puzzles (red-herring props?).

It sounds like not a lot of thought went into the trappings around the puzzles, then.

May I blather on more about escape rooms? This example actually made me think of this thread.
A friend and I did a pretty lousy one yesterday in which for one clue you have to climb into a tiny fake plane and look out the window. I have no idea how anyone would figure out to do that, especially because the rules and the gamesmaster said that players do not have to stand on any props, climb on any props, etc.
Sometimes it baffles me that they claim people can solve these things.
