President Ackbar mini™ @hauntedackbar This is apparently an artwork for the Star Wars card game, but George Lucas had this one pulled before release, because he was already working on the prequels by then. This screams "Vader before the cybernetics" in a way Hayden Cristiansen never did. The fear in Padme’s face is chilling. Anakin looks like he's had too many drinks at the Cantina and is about to take his frustrations out on someone. The idea of Anakin turning to dark side after becoming a father is scary. There’s something about him slowly morphing from a happy father into an abusive asshole that seems too real. Him being older in this image makes it more intense, too. Big difference between a young powerhouse’s temper tantrum and the quiet, looming fury of someone who’s experienced enough to be calculating in his cruelty.

I like it. Anakin should’ve had a terrifying and commanding presence. Hayden did… not.

And once found the first artoo design. Ralph McQuarrie’s concept art for the original trilogy is seriously awesome. I wish I could find a print to hang on my wall….

Speaking of Ackbar, I finally rewatched the three-part episode of The Clone Wars which features a young Ackbar when he was just a Captain. Basically, the king of the Ackbar's planet, Mon Cala, was murdered, leaving the young prince to take over, but he's a teenager and almost no one, except Ackbar himself and a few others, has any faith in him, which leads to a good ol' civil war. Underwater. It is literally a superior version of the Aquaman movie due to the fact that it's laser-focused on its story instead of just tossing in lore at random and making things needlessly complicated. The whole crux bores down to the fact that the prince is made to prove himself and defuse the civil war, and one of the ways he does that is by listening to Ackbar and his other elders, displaying humility and common sense despite his young age. It's actually a really good and surprising deep story that I daresay is even a superior version of The Lion King. Ackbar gets a really, really good showcase as a source of wisdom, a leader, and a warrior. Highly recommended. Oh, and Anakin's there, too.

For the original version of Return of the Jedi… Oh, my gosh, White Palpatine is an idea they brought back for Star Wars Rebels. Basically, Palpatine appears in a communication hologram as kindly old man Palpatine with a shiny white glow, while also acting the part, to try tempting the main character, Ezra, into opening a Jedi Temple for him. It was like watching The Devil tempting Jesus in the desert, except it's... well, yeah, Literally Space Satan tempting someone.

Oh man. Michael C Hall as Anakin! We need to go back in time and make that movie! That would’ve been so great. Basically. I've always wondered "Why Hayden? Why him? Why the femiest guy you could find with the highest-pitched whiny bitch voice you could find?" They needed someone who could carry the presence of an initially noble, but disturbed and ambitious young Jedi Knight through three movies. We never needed to actually see how Obi and Anakin met. We never needed to see his childhood. We just needed to know Anakin as he was. I always imagined Anakin as this great white knight of the Jedi Order, but as the years went on, the status as the Jedi's White Knight became heavier and heavier on his shoulders and the need to live up to his status as the greatest Jedi Knight of all just drove him towards the Dark Side, because he just took too much responsibility for himself and didn't know how to rely on other people. It'd have been a great way to contrast Luke. And Hall would have freaking nailed it.

I have no clue why he envisioned Anakin looking like a Calvin Klein model though.

I have no clue why he envisioned Anakin looking like a Calvin Klein model though. Apparently he passed over Christian Bale for the role, too, which is insane. I really wish more people were in a position to be a second opinion during the prequels' production. Lucas is incredibly imaginative and creative, but like all creators, he needs a good creative team to help him. He didn't have that for the prequels, but he did have that for The Clone Wars TV series.
