I always guessed that Lucas, for who knows what reason, chose Hayden based on his attractiveness alone. I have no clue why he envisioned Anakin looking like a Calvin Klein model though. Apparently he passed over Christian Bale for the role, too, which is insane. I really wish more people were in a position to be a second opinion during the prequels' production. Lucas is incredibly imaginative and creative, but like all creators, he needs a good creative team to help him. He didn't have that for the prequels, but he did have that for The Clone Wars TV series. Oh shit- Christian Bale was almost Anakin?! Where is America Chavez? I want to hop to a universe where that happened.

Long story short, they were all chosen for being "great" young actors who recently had "breakout" roles:
Jake Lloyd for Jingle All the Way in 96 Natalie Portman for Leon 93 and Beautiful Girls 95 Ewan McGregor for Trainspotting 96
and then Hayden for Life as a House 2001
of course George had "pick of the litter" but I have always believed that he chose actors who were "already good" because of his notoriously non-existent ability to pull good acting from them

Casting Liam Neeson was a stroke of genius. While rewatching the prequels not long ago, I though McGregor and Portman did pretty well. It's just Hayden I have real issues with.

I swear. Believe me, the last few years of learning more about his lesser known contributions have helped restore a LOT of the former respect I had for him in the past. And the way he worked with the crew on The Clone Wars was nothing short of great collaboration.

It adds some charming cheesiness to the movie. “Yippee!”

Random fun fact: Lucas was in charge of post production for Jurassic Park. I only learned that recently.

Coppola was his slightly older mentor, and being "cool" also the inspiration for Han Solo

Directing has been described as a "nebulous job, at best" by some filmmakers. So I imagine it must be a nightmare if you're not great at dealing with chaos ensuing or if you're not a natural people person.

now that i think of it, jim cameron ( another super achiever ) also had long breaks from 97-09 and then 09-22

Especially for the ambition of the projects they aimed for. yep, both over achievers for sure, and both prone to self burn out And I can imagine having to reinvent the wheel on an absurdly low budget with about half your crew being inexperienced fresh blood just to make the original Star Wars did not help him ever want to do it again.

one of my favorite stories was when george gave ILM like 3 months to do hundreds of SFX shots, and when he showed up to collect them all, they had completed ONE

That's a lot of effects shots, man! Woof! i forget the exact numbers, but you get the drift, lol Well, in just the opening of the film, there are at least a dozen shots of the ships' exteriors and that's to say nothing of all the blaster effects.
