These days, the topic of Creator's Rights is a big hot topic, but one thing I feel has fallen to the wayside too much is the Customer's, or Buyer's Rights. Right now, we live in a world where if some creative puts their stamp on an existing IP or a new one, and the audience rejects it, it's seen as a failing on the audience's part. Then, the creator is often coddled, "protected", and assured that their vision is just too brilliant for the common moron to understand. The media will also quickly turn to accusations of "toxic fandom" for simply being passionate enough about something to decide they reject how it's been potentially twisted. Yeah, that's not condescending at all. Especially not when they're the paying customers/audience are who fund these creatives' projects and lifestyle with ticket sales, store purchases, and Streaming views/purchases.
I actually think the problem is that audiences have previously given too much ground. Now, instead of films and series being made the intention of trying to create something we'll like, we're expected to appease the people who make content with unconditional loyalty and blind praise. I see too few people just take a loss at the box office or with low views gracefully, and the audience is always lambasted for being too closed minded, too toxic, and too stupid to "get it".
Yet it rarely seems to occur to many of these creatives how much they need us. I'm frankly sick of the audience being expected to change and just consume, and not writers and directors. That said, yes, toxic fans exist, but they're a minority. A loud one, but still only a minority, and should not be taken to represent all of us.
