I saw it last week with mom, and we had a ton of fun.
Quoted from my Knowhere review:
In addendum: It felt like a tightly written and edited film. I thought each scene lasted exactly as long as it needed to, never being too quick or dragging on. You don't see discipline like that in films these days, so I commend the filmmakers who running a tight ship. Additionally, I have no idea why any of the critics are complaining about the film being "too safe". It's Super Mario Bros, it was never meant to be a deep exploration of some big theme. It's... Super Mario Bros, it's the literal epitome of a children's game that also happens to be accessible to adults, which is what I felt the film was.
I know I was certainly never thinking about what bold storytelling it would have or what social issue the Super Mario Bros movie should be tackling when I was fantasizing about the day we'd get an animated Mario film when I was a kid. And I can't really think of a single "relevant" issue I'd actually want a Mario Movie to cover as an adult.

So, I just got back from the Mario movie, and it was fantastic. I don't understand what anyone is complaining about when they say there isn't enough story or character moments. I thought it felt like just the right balance of action, comedy, and drama for a 90 minute movie. I loved how the characters were portrayed, Chris Pratt just disappeared into the role of Mario, and the whole cast did the same. All those months of winging about Chris Pratt being Mario and he ended up doing a great job. He's my new favorite Mario and I am deeply disappointed he won't be taking over for the games.
I also don't mind that Luigi didn't get a lot of time on the first outing. Luigi was basically the main character of the 1993 film, so I liked how Mario got a bigger focus this time.
This is a solid 8/10 for me. Probably my favorite film of the year so far.
