Hated it. The whole story was about this dude who loves music coming to realize that dedicating his life to music was somehow a wasted life. Just a really poorly written muddled up character arc. Very disappointed.

Ouch. Watching this must have felt like a slap in the face to a lot of musicians.

Yeah, I'm sure the message they intended was "Don't hyperfocus on just one thing all your life," but with like with all things, one has to be careful how they word things.

But making him a musician was a really incompatible choice for that arc. If he were a stockbroker or something then it could’ve worked. The movie, at least to me, seemed to go out of its way to condemn creative passion. Which was really odd and jarring. He’s also a music teacher, and never at any point do they have him realize that inspiring kids to play was a worthwhile life. It’s so half baked for a Peter Doctor film.

The part in bold sounds like a very Pixar conclusion. I'm shocked they didn't go with that.

The first scene is him as a disgruntled music teacher that momentarily inspires a gifted young student. Then they just never pay that off. It would have been cliched and obvious AF, but at least it would’ve been (somewhat) satisfying as an arc.

"Subverting the expectation" So often today's filmmakers are afraid to play anything straight and feel like there needs to be some kind of twist.

Though I probably would’ve found the obvious version of Soul’s arc to be disappointing to some degree because of Pixar’s glorious reputation. Coco and Inside Out were both brilliant films that satisfied and subverted expectations. A hard feat though. I just miss the days when Pixar succeeded on a more consistent basis.

Well, the thing about the obvious character arc is that it's obvious often because it is the logical conclusion based on earlier character beats.

Reading the subject title, I totally thought this was going to be a thread about Pixar having sold their soul.

Inside Out was creatively fun Oh Ive definitely seen some of the old school stuff ie the toy stories

I’m usually not one to complain about things being “predictable”. It’s like when people say Dr Strange is too close to Iron Man. Well, so what? Characters overcoming arrogance has been done thousands of times. Arrogance and selfishness are common character flaws. And the set up of that flaw should connect to the payoff. Which may make it predictable, but it also makes it coherent and satisfying.

I'm definitely leaning towards "skipping it" now, but I suppose if one of my friends or family wants to watch it with me, I might relent.

The cast is really good. I could actually go on a much longer more detailed rant about it though but it would involve spoilers so I won’t.

I've already caught on that he dies from what some other people have said, if that's what you're worrying about spoiling.

My complaints are largely about the world building or lack there of in the soul world/soul training center And a lot of what is set up gets subverted later on, rendering it pointless or nonsensical. Most examples involve later plot points so it’s hard to elaborate without spoilers.
